DIY Solar Panel

Recently a lot of people have been interested in the information how to make a solar panel on their own. There are a lot of websites available which show how to make your own solar panel for less than $200. On these websites you can download manuals that will help you to make solar panels and not to be dependent on the energy companies.

I will give you some reasons that you should think over before making a solar panel on your own:

  • Solar panels are made with account of the fact that they are always outdoors, sometimes being in unfavourable conditions withstanding considerable drops of temperature. The companies that produce the panel commercially use very special and highly qualitative materials. Their employees work in specially equipped rooms. There were cases of inflammation of homemade solar panels because of low-quality materials.
  • Solar cells that can be found on eBay are usually sold broken or defective. They are not suitable for long use or can be broken while being installed.
  • If you are not a professional plumber, you will be able to make only cold soldering at which the strength of joining will be poor and the electric contact between solar cells will be very weak. Besides, cold soldering can create high temperatures on the junctions, which can lead to the inflammation of the solar panel.
  • You cannot use plexiglass for coating. Under the impact of high temperatures it can curve the light which falls on the solar panel. At that inner parts of solar panels can get heated.
  • Many manuals say that the frame and support of the solar panel can be made of wood. It is very dangerous, because the temperature on the surface of the solar panel can achieve 90°C (175°F) on a hot day. And if there is an abnormal heating of inner parts of the solar panel, the temperature can be up to 800°C (1472°F).
  • Many websites say that having made a solar panel on your own you will provide your house with electricity. In the US the hookup of homemade solar panels is illegal, and you will not be allowed to install them.
  • Other sites say that you can sell the energy generated by your solar panels. In many countries including the US and the UK it is illegal to use unauthorized equipment to generate electricity, and you will not be allowed to do it.
  • Your homemade solar panels will not be subjected to state tax benefits and discounts.

Thus, you can see that it is not worth taking seriously the creation of DIY solar panels. You can make a small solar panel just for fun to understand technological principles. As I have already said all the necessary instructions can be found on instructables.com. But you should keep in mind the following:

  • Do not make the frame of the solar panel of wood.
  • Remember that your solar panel can inflame under the impact of high temperatures.
  • Do not use your solar panel for permanent energy generation, just for an experiment.
  • You should constantly keep an eye on your solar panel to avoid its inflammation. Do not touch it with bare hands.
  • Every time before using the battery check if there is no moisture in it. If there is you must not use it.
  • Use a cheap controller of battery charge. When used with DIY solar panels it loses its warranty. But if it is broken, you will not lose big money.
  • Charge the batteries of your solar panels only by means of charge controller.
  • Do not use the invertor directly from your solar panel.
